Jim Karpen?s Web Guide: Apple iPhone, CES News, Treo 750 Reviews

I had assumed that this week's column would be dominated by news about the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. But frankly, it seemed like Apple's iPhone announcement dominated the news last week. We'll look at that briefly, plus give links to CES coverage and reviews of the major new Windows Mobile device launched last week: the Cingular Treo 750....

Asus Pegasus Pocket PC Phone

This is the Asus Pegasus Pocket PC phone and comes with GPS on board. It's a slim device with numeric keypad and jog dial for speedy navigation.

Asus are already responsible for a large number of laptops and their skills for design and build are shown in this handset. Exact specs aren't known as yet and we're not even sure if this device ever become fully available, however it's looks were enough to win over judges for the IF Design competition, who have deemed it good enough for their design award in the electronics / telecommunications category.

Lobster 700TV sales prove disappointing - Maybe because..

I'm both annoyed and frustrated by this Guardian story which states that Virgin Mobile UK have sold less than 10,000 of their Lobster 700TV handsets, despite dropping the price heavily and launching a massive advertising campaign with Pamela Anderson. You may remember our review of it - although the keyboard proved a tad wobbly we hoped it would do well, however the Guardian seem to believe that customers aren't interested in the handset.

So, why am I annoyed? Well, I still see far too much emphasis on looks and design by customers. To be honest, even if the Lobster 700TV could cook you dinner and get you free beer people would still go ahead and buy an LG Chocolate because "it looks cool". A case in point would be the Nintendo DS I was attempting to buy for Emily before Christmas - all the colours were available...apart from pink. That was sold out. Why? Street cred, style, fashion.

HTC Vox - Sneak shots

The lack of a multi-touch screen on a Pocket PC secretly causes people to curse daily when they try and tap a number in quickly using the dialpad. Perhaps a way around this is to combine the slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a standard numeric keypad on the front of the device. The result of this idea is the HTC Vox, which has now appeared in photographs here in the UK, courtesy of this Google page from Guri.

The pictures, unfortunately, don't get much better than what you see here, however you can see more of this device, which is rumoured to have Windows Mobile 6.0 for Smartphone, a TI OMAP 850 200MHz CPU, quadband GPRS / EDGE (alas, no 3G), 2 megapixel camera, WiFi 802.11b/g, 128Mb ROM / 64Mb RAM and a MicroSD card slot. The keyboard is an automatic slide-out QWERTY and looks very similar to the HTC P4350 one.

Vodafone v1210 / VDA IV Coming February to UK

Keni has once again emailed following my recent rant at the Vodafone UK Press Team whilst trying to get news of the Vodafone v1210 / VDA IV. It turns out that he's got several contacts within Vodafone and they've confirmed to him that this handset should appear on Voda during the first week of February. Huzzaah!

Vodafone v1605 Updates on the way

Keni has emailed in after spotting recent news on upgrades to the HTC Hermes / HTC TyTn handsets. He's had a chat with the guys at Vodafone and they've advised him that the AKU3.3 Firmware is currently being tested and should launch soon.

If you've got a Vodafone v1605, keep an eye on this Vodafone website or visit Keni's blog for more information.

zaTelnet - Remote telnet and SSH access for Windows Mobile

If, like me, you need telnet or SSH access into a server then you'll be used to using tools like Putty and secureCRT on your PC. For Windows Mobile you should definitely check out zaTelnet, which has support for telnet, SSH1 and now SSH2. There's two versions available, both Freeware and Shareware to bring you more features. You also get support for portrait and landscape screen orientation plus many resolutions. The on-screen keyboard will also help with the various escape-codes you'll be using within Unix etc and you can change the font size too.

This is ideal for anyone with a dedicated server or a system administrator who's on the go and needs to make a quick alteration, run a script or reboot a server whilst on the go.

Windows iPhone 3G jailbreak tool released

Sure, it was already possible (if complicated) to jailbreak a first-gen iPhone running the 2.0 software under Windows, but this is the one-click tool all you crazy cats with those extra G's need if you don't have a Mac -- too bad no one's come up with a better name than "pwn"...

Nokia and Qualcomm bury the patent hatchet, start making out

One of the longest-running -- and certainly most fascinating -- soap operas in the entire wireless world, the seemingly endless patent drama between Nokia and Qualcomm, has finally drawn to an amicable (dare we say anti-climactic) close. After just a single day of arbitration,...

BlackBerry KickStart 8220 gets really early review

The Bold is still stealing the overwhelming majority of RIM's spotlight at the moment for a handful of pretty good reasons: one, it's actually been announced; two, it's 3G; and three, it falls in line with the traditional (and loved) BlackBerry form factor. Lurking...

You Can Finally Download Windows Live Messenger To Your Mobile Device - Your ...

http://www.blackberry.com/devicesof...y.do?code=wlm20

"You can use Windows Live™ Messenger for BlackBerry® devices to chat with other Windows Live Messenger users from your BlackBerry device. To use Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry devices, you must have a Windows Live ID."

Looks like RIM Blackberry users can now download Windows Live Messenger for their device. The software includes such features as creating a custom status, the ability to keep the full chat history for a contact and apparently even has the ability to send and receive files.

And who said having a Windows Mobile device would allow you to have software like your desktop so you don't have to leave your connections behind? Looks like Blackberry users are able to do this at will, whereas we are stuck hoping the carrier installs Messenger, because MS sure won't let you download and install it on their mobile platform.

Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail

http://www.winplay.com/item/Leisure...arryLoveForSail

Your favorite smooth talker from the 80’s hit the high seas as he cruises for love! Leisure Suit Larry: Love For Sail is a mobile re-production of the classic Larry PC game. Become Larry as he tries to woo the most beautiful, unsuspecting female vacationers. Larry has seemingly infinite opportunities to use his signature lines, including a plane, cruise ship, beaches, and the casino. He is on the trip of a lifetime and the theme provides the perfect summer fun. Will Larry score a date? You control Larry’s fate."

If there is one thing I have learned in life above all others it is that in real life girls really aren't that found of guys with large gold medalions and leisure suits. However, you have to admire a cartoon man with confidence with the law of averages on his side. You can pick up Leisure Suit Larry: Love For Sail today from WinPlay for only $9.99

Live Mesh Available Via Your Mobile Web Browser

http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/l...on_your_mo.html

"On Wednesday we brought news of Microsoft's Live Mesh cloud-based storage service, giving you 5 gigs of space for your files to come and go as you please. Today, the big M unleashed mobile-optimized access to the service, meaning you can get to your data while you're on the run. It's not the full-on Windows Mobile client we're hoping for, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. If you're already signed up for the tech preview, point your favorite mobile browser (yes, even the iPhone's) at https://m.mesh.com - note the secure site - and have at it."

Not to get ones hopes up but this is not the speculated mobile client that will make transferring data from the cloud to your handset as easy as pie. However, what this web application does, it does pretty well. Signing into the service you can browse through your Live folders and even download files that are in there. At the time of posting this I was unable to test downloading any other filetypes besides images so I am unsure if you could download a Zip archive or EXE file to your handset but if you wanted to get some images from your desktop computer to your handset and did not want to deal with the hassle of pulling out your USB cable and syncing, I would suggest giving Live Mesh a try.

Microsoft: Forget iPhone, We Are Still #2 In Business

http://www.computerworld.com/action...&intsrc=hm_list

"Companies -- lots of them -- are still buying Windows Mobile smart phones, and Microsoft Corp. doesn't want to let iPhone mania make them forget. During Microsoft's most recent fiscal year, 325 enterprises purchased at least 500 Windows Mobile phones, with many buying many more, said Scott Rockfeld, group products manager for the mobile communications business at Microsoft, in a Friday interview. "

With all of the hype surrounding the iPhone 2.0 launch recently, which includes some capabilities to synchronize against some of your Exchange data directly with the server, Microsoft doesn't want IT pros to lose sight of the fact that Windows Mobile is still very big in business, although still behind RIM's popular Blackberry platform. Even at that, there are a lot of companies with RIM's BES server that use Windows Mobile devices, and over 100 are decommissioning their BES server. The article also mentioned one company buying 10,000 Windows Mobile devices but wouldn't give the name of the company, speculating only that it might be Wal-Mart, the world's largest private employer.

Windows Live for Windows Mobile Released... Again

http://wl.windowsmobile.com/

"Wait no more! The latest bits for Windows Live Client for your Windows Mobile are available for download. To get yours now, point your mobile browser to http://wl.windowsmobile.com If you have Windows Live already installed on your device, you will need to uninstall it first. To do that, go to Settings->Remove Programs, select Windows Live entry from the list (if any) and click Remove. If you don’t find Windows Live on the list, then you are good to go."

There's a new version of Windows Live for Windows Mobile available, but don't expect to see anything other than bug fixes. Like the previous Windows Live release, Messenger isn't included; so, if your device already includes Windows Live with Messenger, get ready to wave goodbye to Messenger if you install this version over the top. If that's not something you want to do, you'll need to wait for your carrier/manufacturer to update Windows Live in an upcoming ROM update, which, of course, could take weeks/months/years to deliver. Uh-huh, that's a topic we just can't rant enough about.
